“This is a horrific event,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates told a news conference, adding that a suspect was taken into custody in the parking lot behind the theater. He had initially put the death toll at 14, but a spokesman later told NBC the toll had been revised to 12.

I, like many people in this “Smartphone age,” woke up this morning to check facebook and see what happened while I was sleeping.  The first post I see is from a friend in northern Virginia posting the following status:

“Woke up this morning to see that life is now imitating art. Everything on the news reflects every bad movie out there. Praying for the families who thought they would see their kids come home from the movie last night. I’m going to the source that brings light, not dark.”

I wasn’t sure what she was talking about but figured maybe someone up in her area had had a car accident or something and teens didn’t make it home from a movie.  As I scrolled a little further, I saw many other comments and posts about how they would be praying for the families involved in the shooting in Denver.  In my mind these were still separate incidence and began to really agree with my friend’s original post.

“Everything on the news reflects every bad movie out there.”

What it would be like to live a day in the Leave it to Beaver days.  I know it is just a TV show.  I know that everyday life wasn’t like that.  But oh to be able to rest in the fact that when your kids went to school, you could bank on the worst they would come home with being a black eye from a scuffle on the playground.  And even, it would be an isolated incident.  Throw a couple punches and it’s done.  Oh to be part of a world where are kids are generally safe.  Where you can leave your car doors unlocked and help people stranded on the side of the road.

When I think about how we can make that type of a world a reality, I can’t help but be reminded that we have to be the change we want to see in the world.  Every change starts with me (and you).

For me, I know that I have to make the following changes, today:

  • Time with my Maker isn’t only reserved for the morning hours.  Thank Him for everything I have, see and love.
  • Make time to smile at people in the stores.  Slow down…
  • Tell people what they mean to me, DAILY.  Never assume they know.

If I made these changes in myself, maybe a domino style avalanche would happen in the lives of people I have contact with.  And then maybe the people they have contact with.  Maybe over time, we’d see a renewal in our country and the world.

These are my three changes, what about you?  What do you want to see change in the world and what will you commit to changing in order to see that change in the world?

Cheers,

Andrea

{April 5, 2012}   Do You Have Determination?

Today I was visiting some of my follower’s blogs and came across this blog that talked about how she and her dad did the New York Half Marathon.  To say it inspired me would be a complete understatement.  I couldn’t get it out of my mind for the rest of the day!

Think about the last goal you set for yourself. *waits a few minutes to allow you to think….stop reading and think!*  🙂

Answer these three questions:

  1. Did you reach your goal?
  2. Did you reach it on time (did you set a time limit for achieving it)?
  3. What resources did you utilize in order to accomplish your goal?

If you answered yes to the first two, chances are you have an answer for #3, too.  Let me explain.

In my experiences, when I have attempted to reach a goal on my own, I fell short. As a teen I used to run competitively.  I had amazing race times, would get personal records and enjoyed every minute of it.  But guess what, the races I ran were team races.  Cross country, 4x800m, 4x1600m.  I did do the regular 1600 and 800, too, but guess what?  My score went to help the team!

As an adult and after having my three kids, I have tried several times to shed the baby weight and to get back into my training.  I thought it would be easy.  I thought it would be a breeze.  And it would be if I had accountability and someone other than my eight year old son, though he does really well at kicking my butt out there.  I know myself well enough to know that I need a well thought out plan of action, and then someone to hold my feet to the floor.  Allow me to share with you how I plan to shed the 20 pounds that are sticking with me and to get back on my training regiment.

Goal: In November I want do the color run in Nashville.

How will I achieve it?

  1. As soon as I found out about this race, I posted on Facebook that I was looking for people who were interested in doing the race with me. There were around 10 people who said they would do it also.  One of which is coming all the way from Kansas to run it with me!  GO BECCA!
  2. I downloaded MapMyRun to my Android phone and got things set up on my desktop so I could track my runs.  How often, how far, how many calories burned, food intake, etc etc etc. I also decided to make my profile public so I could share my workouts with my friends.  One of them rides bikes competitively and uses MapMyRide so she knows how the system works.  Another friend of mine whom I run with on occasion has the program on her Android phone as well.
  3. I have asked my son to train and run it with me as well.  Trust me, he is more than happy to get out there and run 3 times a day if I were up for it.  He’s always asking when our next run is.
  4. Now, my blog!  You all know what I’m doing so I give you permission to ask me about how it’s going.
  5. I have thought about asking people to take pictures of me around town if they catch me walking during my workouts and then posting them to my wall, but I’m not sure if people would actually do it or not.  But I have thought about it!

So that’s what I have so far.  I know that if I am training and eating the way I am supposed to be, the weight will come off or my inches will decrease on their own.  I’m not worried too much about that aspect of things.

Feel free to comment with you experiences with such situations.  Lend a helping hand, so to speak if you know of something that would help.  Offer encouragement.  And most important of all, HOLD ME ACCOUNTABLE!

Cheers,

Andrea

I was on twitter today right before heading out to plant some flowers and saw Myra ( @blessedlife2) had posted about a contest a mutual “follower” was having:

“RT @decor_chick: Hey everyone come enter today’s giveaway and get your pantries and cupboards organized! http://bit.ly/H7sgtb

I jumped on the chance to enter!  I would encourage you to do the same if you are anything like me.  I want an organized kitchen but simply lack the know-how on how to go about doing it.  I have the best intentions of getting everything in order but end up making things worse.  My good friend Michelle has given me a few things to help organize my pots and pans, thankfully or I may have gotten pulled in by the monsters who live among them!  My canned goods cabinet is even worse off than my pans!  At dinner time we basically decide what we’re going to have as sides by what’s at the front.  To be perfectly honest I’m not even sure whats at the back of the rows of canned foods.

So what is this giveaway for?  It’s for a product that helps a person organize their canned goods.  It’s similar to those soda can organizers for your fridge except it’s for your canned goods in your pantry/cabinets!  It rotates your stash and keeps things nice and tidy while doing it!

Click either the link on the tweet above or go to www.decorchick.com to enter for your chance to win a set of 4 can organizers!  There’s even a discount code listed on her blog good for 10% off of your order at www.canorganizer.com if you aren’t the lucky one who wins.  That’s a pretty good deal.  The products are priced reasonably to start with, but who wouldn’t like to save a little bit?

I hope you all have a great day!  As for me, I’m heading out to finally get those flowers planted. I love spring!

Cheers,
Andrea
